About the job

We’re MI6, also known as the Secret Intelligence Service. Our mission is to protect the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from regional instability, terrorism, cyber-attacks and other overseas threats. Working across the globe in partnership with MI5 and GCHQ, we work to counter these threats through the provision of secret intelligence. Join us, and you’ll provide vital support to this work, within a supportive and encouraging environment that puts the emphasis on teamwork.

As an Electrical Technician, you’ll help us maintain our global estate. Based in our growing specialist team, you’ll travel the globe, maintaining electrical systems at our sites all over the world. It’s a unique and exciting opportunity, but bear in mind that you must be flexible – you could be asked to travel at any time, including weekends (spending 150 to 170 days per year overseas).

Our Electrical Technicians install and repair electrical systems in both commercial and domestic premises. Installation, fault-finding, repairs, safety compliance – they’re ready for anything. Join us, and you could be working on fire alarms one day and air conditioning the next. Whatever the task, you’ll assess and scope works, identify what equipment’s needed, and provide reports on costs.

In short, you’ll provide a reactive and planned maintenance service, working independently to locate, diagnose and rectify faults. If sub-contractors are involved, you’ll see that their performance is up to scratch. You’ll also advise project managers on larger works, provide exceptional customer service, and support other tradespeople on electrical, plumbing and building projects. And, because you’re a true professional, you’ll do your best to minimise disruption when working in occupied office areas.

At this level, you’ll be mentoring junior colleagues, so sound expertise is vital. To join us, you must have completed an Electrical Apprenticeship to NVQ level 3 or above, including AM1 and AM2. Inspecting and Testing certification to City & Guilds 2391 (or equivalent) will be essential too. Along with these qualifications, you’ll have experience of low and extra-low voltage wiring systems, alarm systems and three phase electrical installations. You’ll also be adept at installing and maintaining lighting, hence your JIB/ECS-approved status.

Newly qualified? Highly experienced? It doesn’t matter. What’s important is that you’re a problem solver with a good grasp of NICEIC and electrical infrastructure and wiring documents. Ready to travel and fit to fly, you’ll be happy working alone or as part of a team.

Continuous development is all part of the package. We’ll help you keep up with evolving standards and changes within the industry. If you need further training on electrical installation and maintenance, we’ll be happy to oblige. That way, your skillset will always be top notch. It all starts with in-house training from our team of experts. If you need further skills – for example, in coding or new technologies – there’s the potential to learn through external courses.

At MI6 diversity and inclusion are critical to our mission. To protect the UK, we need a truly diverse workforce that reflects the society we serve. This includes diversity in every sense of the word: those with different backgrounds, ages, ethnicities, gender identities, sexual orientations, ways of thinking and those with disabilities or neurodivergent conditions. We therefore welcome and encourage applications from everyone, including those from groups that are under-represented in our workforce such as women, those from an ethnic minority background, people with disabilities and those from low socio-economic backgrounds.
