WHAT TO EXPECT

This role will focus on the component and system delivery of all internally designed engines for UK and global manufacture. The group leader is responsible for leading a team of component, CAD Module leaders in respect of the timely delivery of all engineering design, verification and launch activities including issues arising from current production.
The role demands strong technical leadership in engine component design and verification combined with a versatile approach to the changing circumstances within programmes and an ability to be able to manage conflicting priorities between programmes in a positive and proactive manner.
Clear direction and balancing of attributes, whilst considering programme deliverables on quality, cost, weight, function and timing are critical aspects of the role.

Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership and steering for a wide range of mechanical / electrical components & systems
  • To co-ordinate the design direction and decision making on behalf of the D&R commodity group
  • To be a balancing arbitrator for design issue resolution and direction taking into account the quality, cost, weight, function and timing programme metrics
  • To deliver design integrity at all times whilst under pressure to support conflicting priorities
  • Provide leadership to module leaders, CAD and component delivery engineers
  • Provide mentoring and coaching to staff within the team and be responsible for the organization, development and training of the team in support of a world class department
  • To manage group resources in a fast efficient manner
  • To be responsible for budget forecasting including commercial and contractual negotiations with internal and external suppliers.
  • To lead technical integration discussions across the wider team and to pro-actively engage with other departments in the resolution of issues
  • To show leadership in developing new working practices & ways of working to improve people, product or processes
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

The ideal candidate will be a team player with a strong technical background and proven knowledge of engine engineering; cooling, fuel injection & boosting system knowledge preferred. Other knowledge, skills and experience we’re looking for include:

Essential:

  • A deep understanding of design principles and the application of quality tools within an engine engineering environment
  • Proven knowledge in the management and application of computer aided design & analysis techniques.
  • Ability to communicate overall engine design technical strategy at all levels within JLR.
  • Clear leadership in technical and organizational problem resolution
  • Proven knowledge and skills in evaluating new technology in determining strategic direction
  • An ability to communicate a technical vision to the wider D&R team in order to drive toward a single solution
  • Provide clear direction within a matrix organization balancing the technical / cost and attribute drivers for individual programme managers whilst maintaining a strong technical and engineering standards focus

Desirable:

  • Ability to communicate overall engine technical strategy at all levels within JLR and to drive technical excellence and strategic direction in all engine systems
  • Ability to act in an entrepreneurial environment and be resourceful and resilient to the changing demands of the business
