Illusion DC provides bespoke scenic fabrication and project support services for theatre, television, exhibition and the live events industries. Our workshops support designers and creative teams across the world in creating some truly unique experiences and constructions.

About the role:

As the Head of Engineering/Metalwork, you will be responsible for leading one of our three workshop departments and be a key player in all our work. You will work on projects from the design stage to delivery, collaborating with the drafting team, project managers, and other departmental heads to schedule, design and deliver all our projects.

Working closely with the rest of our team the Head of Engineering/Metalwork is the direct manager for our full-time and freelance metalworking staff and is responsible for both their day to day works and ongoing development. Encouraging a productive and positive environment is a key part of the role and we are looking for a candidate that can motivate and develop their team into the future as we grow.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage the flow of projects through the engineering bay, assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and ensuring timely and efficient production and installation.
  • Manage our full-time and freelance metalworking staff and be responsible for their day-to-day works and ongoing development.
  • Encourage a productive and positive environment, motivate and develop your team into the future as we grow.
  • Work with the workshop manager and buyers on maintenance, ensuring tooling and materials are kept stocked.
  • Keep the department in top production condition at all times.

 

Ideal candidates would demonstrate several of the below:

  • Good knowledge of scenic fabrication build and finish techniques.
  • Familiarity with working from and explaining bench drawings.
  • Experience managing a team in a construction environment, either within scenic construction or allied trades.
  • Track record of on-time project delivery, with demonstrated experience in identifying key dates and deadlines and being able to highlight and solve shortfalls.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Proven people management skills, with a track record of creating a positive work environment.
  • Experience mentoring and developing Junior staff.

This is a full-time role and is based at our workshop in Belvedere, South East London. Our standard hours are Mon – Fri 0800 – 1700. Overtime maybe be offered on a project to project basis.
