The role
As a Head of Fleet Compliance you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. Babcock provides services including fleet time engineering, facilities management, waterfront services, logistics and transport within an agreed operating budget, firmly focused on continuous and sustainable improvement in warship and submarine support.

Day to day, you'll lead and manage the following teams in order to meet safety, quality, time and cost targets and to provide independent oversight of Fleet Operations activities in order to assist the other Fleet Operations department heads in remaining compliant with applicable statute, legislation or local policies.

You will additionally be accountable for:

  • Lead on engendering appropriate behaviours with regard to health, safety, security, environment and quality within the Fleet Operations Compliance department ensuring that all tasks are carried out in accordance with the Company's policies and requirements.
  • Managing the successful completion of departmental objectives and targets as agreed with the Director, Fleet Operations.
  • Championing process, technical and business improvement to improve quality and product safety within Fleet Operations.
  • Assist the Director, Fleet Operations and the Heads of Fleet Programmes and Fleet Engineering in optimising the utilisation and efficiency of all Fleet Operations resource with a particular emphasis on delivering conforming product.
  • Provision of submarine operations and engineering expertise and knowledge in order to assist the Heads of Fleet Programmes and Fleet Engineering in delivering their outputs in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Ensuring that instructions, processes and procedures used by Fleet Engineering teams when conducting work on submarines.


The role is a full time, permanent position 37 hours a week and will be based onsite at Faslane, Clyde with hybrid working from home arrangements one day a week.

Agile working may be available to employees in some instances, applying the principles of fairness and consistency whilst ensuring that the overriding business needs can be appropriately met. Essential experience of the Head of Fleet Compliance :

  • Experience in operational leadership experience
  • Knowledge Current class submarine systems including Primary and Secondary marine engineering systems and equipment, Ship's Systems and hull structures (desirable not essential)
  • Understanding and knowledge of Safe Systems of Work
  • Ability to conduct Risk Assessments &Quality Assurance
  • Expertise in areas such as Product Safety, Planning processes, Budget management processes & Business applications
  • Lean/6 sigma & JSP375 (Management of Health and Safety in Defence)


Qualifications for the Head of Fleet Compliance:

  • Ideally you will hold a Chartered Engineer status or equivalent
  • Nuclear Submarine Quality Assurance Course (desirable)
  • ILM 7 or equivalent


The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC ITAR security clearance for this role.
