Job Description
Who are we looking for?


The UKAEA is looking for an experienced and talented Head of Operations to lead and develop the H3AT Business Unit in a department with a state-of-the-art new facility. You will manage the delivery of tritium and waste management solutions to meet the UKAEA mission of bringing Fusion to the point of commercial realisation.

As Head of Operations, you will have the ability to build collaborations and communicate effectively with people at all levels. Proven leadership and people management skills coupled with the ability to build and motivate teams are essential to succeed in this role.

What will you be responsible for?

The Head of Operations is responsible for 5 groups (Waste Services Group, Waste Innovation Unit, Tritium Process Group, Tritium Science Group and Active Gas Handling System Operations Group (AGHS)) and will play a pivotal role to enable the delivery of the H3AT business initiative. You will need to ensure that recruitment and training strategies are in place to ensure that the capability exists to deliver the business needs. Your main responsibilities include:

-Providing dynamic and effective leadership of the H3AT Business Unit, delivering the business objectives contributing to H3AT’s and the UKAEA’s strategies.

-Maximising the efficiency of the H3AT BU, building a high performing team and continually improving processes.

-Ensuring all activities are delivered safely, actively managing risks and assuring compliance to UKAEA safety procedures

-Ensuring systems are in place to assure the quality, delivery and cost of programme deliverables within H3AT

-Being accountable for ensuring the H3AT operation allocates resources effectively and tracks project progress to commitments, by being responsible for capacity planning, agreeing and monitoring of resourcing levels and skills across the BU to meet the business needs.

-Being accountable for agreeing annual budgets and tracking progress against budget, working with Finance to provide accurate management reporting against H3AT budgets and goals

-Ensuring all areas within the BU develop a skills pipeline.

Other duties

Working across the organisation to contribute to UKAEA initiatives as required

Additional information

Some travel and becoming a Monitored Radiation Worker are required.

Qualifications
Essential qualifications, skills, experience and competence required


-Engineering degree or equivalent

-Chartered status of Engineering professional institute

-Project management experience and experience in using formal project Management processes

-Extensive experience of managing professional staff in a complex technological environment

-Experience of complex, high hazard plant in a safety management or technical management capacity

Desirable skills, experience and competence

-Experience of handling radioactive materials

-A formal qualification in Safety

-A formal Project Management or general Management qualification

-Experience managing scientific research activities
