About the job

WHAT TO EXPECT

Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) are a critical part of JLR’s future strategy. Traction batteries with high energy density present a demanding set of Multiphysics engineering challenges. Thermal runaway of current lithium-ion cell technology and its propagation throughout packs presents the biggest safety challenge of electrification. The purpose of this role is to lead battery abuse and safety testing to support the design, development and delivery of the next generation traction battery systems.

Working in a state-of-the-art facility, you’ll provide the analytical power behind our vehicles working in our Powertrain Engineering team. You'll find the optimal balance of performance, sustainability and integrity whilst responding to the environmental issues that shape our industry.

This is an exciting opportunity to join what will be a growth area of engineering critical to our corporate future. The Powertrain Engineering function drives development of new technologies and features through to delivery of new electric vehicle programmes.

This role is based in the Battery Product and Technology Chapter at Gaydon as part of the overall powertrain electrified engineering group. Reporting to the High Voltage Battery Technical Specialist, the engineer would be responsible for:

• Design, develop and execute test plans for thermal runaway propagation testing and abuse of batteries and their components

• Analyse test data and results to ensure that battery components meet safety and design requirements

• Prepare detailed reports and analysis of test results

• Develop and implement procedures for testing materials to determine their thermal characteristics

• Drive the resolution of cross functional technical/manufacturing issues using a global 8D process

• Manage suppliers through concept design phase, procurement of prototypes & tooling and ensure components perform to requirements.

• Support next generation battery pack materials projects with research organisations

• Support the CAE team with building battery models
