What you’ll do
This role is within Powertrain Test Operations (PTTO), part of Engineering Operations (EO).
The Prototype Manufacturing Engineering (PME) Team is the key team that delivers the production lines and capability to PTTO to enable building of prototype BEV commodities, powering the vehicles of the future.
This role will be directly influencing the Quality of the products that are delivered into our customers hands.
As we progress the technology within our vehicles, its vital that the prototypes we produce are to specification and quality. This delivers the invaluable data to the engineering teams enabling us to produce the incredible products we aspire to deliver to our customers.
Key accountabilities and responsibilities
- Set and apply objectives for any attached team member via Policy Deployment, Performance Review process and Competency Assessment.
- Provision of technical and supervisory leadership to the team in order to meet and exceed output targets. Including provision of Plans, Information, Material, Instruction and Parts for the welding processes.
- Develop and deliver WPS and Engineering Specifications, in alignment with Design requirements, and Manufacturing Process Development teams.
- Validate WPS and Engineering Specifications through structured trials, including Design of Experiments
- Communicate and engage with the relevant stakeholders, including with the Component Owners to establish the process, procedure and requirements for welding activities, with the Programme Team to align on timing plan and trial parts requirements and Manufacturing to validate and transfer process and prototype parameters
- Provide technical knowledge into the Battery and Stator Teams for welding capability and processes and procedures development, including to support BOP, BOS, PFMEA, Control Plans
- Identify and implement in-process and “end of line” welding testing and quality checks to ensure safe delivery of welds to the agreed quality on time, including definition and validation of acceptance criteria.
- Plan
- Identify, review and raise capability and/or capacity improvement to the existing welding capability for both Battery and Stator commodities, in alignment with Programme and Design requirements
- Identify, review and raise new capability requirement related to welding technology for Battery and Stator commodities
- Manage the budget for their area; escalate when risks to budget arise
- Raise orders to procure Build capability from Engineering Statement of Work to supplier selection for the prototype welding capability
- Manage suppliers, define welding requirements and specifications, and ensure safe delivery of orders on time and to the agreed quality for the prototype welding capability
- Hand over all the necessary documents, equipment, tooling and training to the Build Operations and Build Engineering team when Final Acceptance is complete
- Ensure H&S measures are integrated in the solutions delivered to JLR and the Build teams in coordination with the H&S Team and H&S regulations
- Ensuring that all personnel maintain high levels of valid technical competency and have provision of personal development plan.
- Is responsible for owning the Timing plan and commissioning and acceptance/trials plan for welding activities
- Report weekly on operational readiness for Welding capability for each upcoming Programme phase, including changes to Programmes at an appropriate frequency, including In-Process Test and EOL test
- Maintain department records for audit purposes
- Mentor and Train of those in Early Careers and Training as appropriate.
- Support the Bill of Sequence and Bill of Process (BoS/BoP) documents for commodity related to welding steps, in accordance with Manufacturing Engineering (ME)
- Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time
What you’ll need
Essential:
- A Level 4 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Clear and confident communicator both orally and in writing
- Proactive attitude and willingness to learn new systems and processes
- Ability to accurately and concisely present complex technical ideas or project issues to a diverse audience
- Ability to challenge existing thinking in a positive way whilst building credibility and trust through experience and personal style
- Computer literate, including Microsoft Office and Excel competency to produce plans, reports, presentations, graphs, processes and SPL documents
- Ability to mentor and train others
Desirable:
- A Level 6 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
- Proven experience in a build process environment
- Technical expertise and experience of build or manufacturing facilities
- Technical expertise and experience of technology
- Experience of delivering both operational, transactional Facilities management solutions
- Experience with IATF 16949 or ISO 9001 standards and requirements
