We are now looking for two individuals from a mechanical engineering background to retrain as Mechanical Engineering Inspectors and join our Chemicals, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division (CEMHD) on a full-time, permanent basis. Part-time working hours are available for this role. We can accept part-time applicants who can commit to working a minimum of 27 hours per week.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a chartered engineer from a mechanical engineering or integrity management background with experience working in a high-hazard industry to re-focus their career and take on an inspector position with our essential organisation.



You’ll be supported through a Specialist Training Programme (STP) to gain the skills and expertise to become a safety inspector within major hazard industries. You will enrol on the STP and undertake a combination of study, practical experience and a final assessment ensuring you are equipped to operate at the forefront of your specialist area.

The Role

As a Mechanical Engineering Inspector, after completing our Specialist Training Programme, you will undertake inspections of facilities within major hazard industries to ensure they are safe and H&S risks are mitigated.

Inspecting major hazard installations, you’ll investigate incidents, determine underlying causes, take enforcement or support actions and prepare notices and reports.

You will produce technical findings within written reports, provide expert evidence at legal proceedings and assess the mechanical engineering elements of safety reports from Control of Major Accident Hazards (COMAH) establishments.

Additionally, you’ll support the development of technical and operational strategies and represent us at meetings and events, including conducting presentations and talks to technical audiences and stakeholders.

Please note, enrolment in the Specialist Training Programme (STP) is a legal requirement that you will be required to study for and successfully complete.


About You

To be considered as a Mechanical Engineering Inspector, you will need:

- Practical mechanical engineering and/or integrity management experience gained within an industrial setting with major accident potential
- Experience working in a high-hazard industry
- Experience making independent, authoritative decisions based on technical evidence
- Experience working with other technical disciplines to achieve and maintain the safe operation of plant
- Experience of integrity management systems for primary containment equipment
- A degree or equivalent qualification in mechanical engineering or a closely related subject
- Membership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (or similar)
- Chartered status and registration with the Engineering Council
- A full, valid driving licence

Please note, you will be required to spend periods of time away from home, visiting sites and other offices overnight, which your working pattern will accommodate.
