The Mechanisms team within AWE are looking for innovative, creative, and highly motivated Mechanical Engineering Technicians. The ideal applicant will be very driven and have high levels of passion for product realisation, through the application of numerous engineering technologies.

The successful applicant will join the team responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly and testing of robust miniature weapon safety and environmental sensing mechanisms. The role will support current and future programs of work at AWE.

Location: Reading

Salary: £24,270-£42,000 per annum

The Role?

  • Perform inspection, assembly, testing and approval of mechanisms component builds within the teams in-house laboratory facilities
  • Writing technical documents or reports to support to work listed above
  • Use of various types of laboratory equipment and plant to support the teams deliverables
  • Training and mentorship of others in the use of laboratory equipment
  • Running and maintaining of the teams Additive Manufacturing equipment
  • Provide technical input and contributions during design team meetings
  • Ensure laboratory equipment is readily available for use, equipment utilisation and deconfliction
  • Organising and/or supporting plant and equipment maintenance schedules

Candidate essential skills and experience:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, ability to work independently but also within a team, supporting colleagues to achieve the teams goals
  • Awareness of a safety-critical environments such as laboratories or production facilities
  • Understanding of the use of measurement devices such as micrometers and depth gauges
  • Experience with Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Candidate desirable skills and experience:

  • ONC, HNC or HND within an engineering field
  • Previous experience of working within a laboratory environment
  • Engineering manufacturing techniques including Additive Manufacturing
  • Assembly and/or inspection of very small mechanical components
  • Writing of technical documents or reports

Candidates would also benefit from knowledge of ANY of the following:

  • Materials, such as - stainless steels, ferrites, ceramics and noble metals
  • Joining techniques - welding, bonding, crimping, soldering
  • Design of tooling, jigs and fixtures
  • Product testing and validation
  • Knowledge around control and use of chemicals
  • How to read or produce engineering drawings

This role will require the wearing of PPE.

The successful candidates must be willing to travel within the UK and overseas as required, which may entail short stays away from home.

Candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the necessary security clearance for the role.
