Role Type: Full time / Permanent
Role ID: SF52977

At Babcock we're working to create a safe and secure world, together, and if you join us, you can play your part as a Mechanical Fitter. We have several exciting opportunities to support the Submarine programmes here at our Devonport site.

The role
As a Mechanical Fitter, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is your chance to be part of something bigger, contributing directly to the maintenance and upkeep of the Royal Navy's fleet. This could see you working on Warships, Submarines or within our factories supporting the delivery these complex engineering projects.

This role could see you working on a wide range of fascinating equipment, from fluid pumps and diesel engines to high-pressure air and hydraulic systems. Your day-to-day could involve:

  • Installing and aligning new mechanical equipment, ensuring everything is meticulously positioned and operational
  • Working from engineering drawings and technical specifications - a keen eye for detail is a must!
  • Conducting functional tests and surveys to verify that systems are performing optimally.
  • Troubleshooting any mechanical issues that may arise and ensuring efficient solutions

If you can bring technical skills and a safe working attitude, then we can offer you the opportunity to work on some of the most exciting engineering projects this country has to offer.

We offer a full-time, 36-hour position based at the historic Devonport Royal Dockyard, providing you with the opportunity to work in a truly unique environment. Please speak to the recruitment team about relocation assistance.

We offer travel expenses to the interview (outside of a 35-mile radius of Devonport).

Essential experience of the Mechanical Fitter:

  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and work instructions
  • Operating various workshop machinery specific to mechanical fitting
  • Experience working in the marine engineering industry, particularly on Royal Navy ships, submarines, Royal Fleet Auxiliary vessels, or large commercial ships. We'll also consider relevant experience from other engineering sectors.
  • A proven track record of working within high-performing engineering teams
  • Demonstrable experience of removing, installing, and overhauling marine mechanical equipment, with a focus on propulsion systems, auxiliary systems, and power generation equipment.
  • Experience working in a marine engineering environment (desirable)

Qualifications for the Mechanical Fitter

We're looking for candidates with a good foundation in mechanical engineering. This could include:

  • Completion of a time-served apprenticeship in marine or naval engineering
  • An indentured apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline
  • A Level-3 Modern Apprenticeship in a mechanical discipline
  • A Level-3 Mechanical Engineering qualification
  • The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
