Who are we looking for?
We are seeking an experienced neutronics scientist or engineer who has a track record in delivering projects involving nuclear analyses, with a strong interest in solving nuclear technology challenges. This is a great opportunity to work in a high performing group to research, solve and assess some of the most important nuclear technology challenges that directly contribute to the development of fusion energy though the application of state-of-the art computational methods and nuclear codes.
You will have knowledge and experience with the use of radiation transport codes, scientific programming and scripting as well as Linux operating systems, parallel computing and high-performance computing. Excellent analytical and technical report writing skills are required, as well as the ability to work collaboratively as part of a team, as well as independently when required.
What will you be responsible for?
- Participating in, and managing, packages of related work to support projects delivery, on time and to budget
- Producing analysis models using CAD to MCNP conversion and simplification tools and methods
- Conducting radiation transport and activation (neutronics) simulations using nuclear analysis tools, such as MCNP and FISPACT-II
- Conducting and driving programming and code development to support nuclear radiation simulations for a variety of fusion devices such as JET, ITER and DEMO
- Writing excellent technical reports with little supervision
- Presenting technical work to project boards, internal and external clients, on conferences and journal publications
- Interacting with colleagues and experts in other scientific fields and liaising with large international organisations
- Supporting the creation of bid documents for commercial and research contracts
Essential skills, experience and competence required
- A degree in a relevant physics, engineering or computer science degree, or equivalent subject
- Knowledge and experience with the use of radiation transport codes, such as MCNP, and inventory codes, such as FISPACT-II
- Excellent analytical skills and technical report writing abilities
- Track record in delivering projects involving nuclear analyses with time constraints with little supervision
- Knowledge and experience with scientific programming and scripting (Fortran, python scripting)
- Knowledge and experience of Linux operating systems, parallel computing (e.g. MPI and OpenMP) and high-performance computing
Desirable skills, experience and competence
- Knowledge and/or experience with: magnetic confinement fusion; CAD modelling software/tools; high performance computing
- Higher degree or doctorate in a nuclear discipline area
