The role

As a Principal Systems Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. This is a highly prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.

Day to day,

  • Provide leadership and accountability in the delivery of systems engineering activities through the application of process, domain knowledge and experience. You will work as a system engineering subject matter expert. You will understand concepts and principles, to design, develop and determine solutions to functional issues; and personally undertake the most complex work within the subject area.
  • You will design, structure, and write requirement sets and their associated acceptance criteria. You will create and maintain the requirements database, development of the Supplier requirements and their traceability to the customer requirement. You will lead the acceptance process to demonstrate the customer requirement has been met.
  • You will plan, deliver, and monitor the systems engineering scope of work within a project. Manage systems engineering risks and manage the technical interface with internal and external stakeholders.
  • You will provide help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their development. You will provide coaching, and assistance as needed. You will work closely with others in multi-disciplinary teams perform system definition activities.
  • In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development while providing help and direction to less experienced team members to support both their effective working, and their development.

Essential experience of the Principal Systems Engineer

  • Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in a Systems Engineering, Physics, Mathematics or Engineering discipline with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered
  • You will be a member of a relevant institution and either hold Chartered Engineer status or be working towards it
  • You will have detailed knowledge and experience of managing and leading systems engineering
  • You will have an analytical approach and a desire for complex problem solving
  • You will be a team player with strong presentation, written and oral communication skills
  • You will have experienced requirement management tool user e.g., DOORS
  • You will have high level of competence in using Microsoft Excel
  • You will be either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearance

This Role is a hybrid role based at Bristol with an average 2/3 days per week on site.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance level for this role.
