What you’ll do

This role is within Powertrain Test Operations (PTTO), part of Engineering Operations (EO).

The Prototype Manufacturing Engineering (PME) Team is the key team that delivers the production lines and capability to PTTO to enable building of prototype BEV commodities, powering the vehicles of the future.

This role will be directly influencing the Quality of the products that are delivered into our customers hands.

As we progress the technology within our vehicles, its vital that the prototypes we produce are to specification and quality. This delivers the invaluable data to the engineering teams enabling us to produce the incredible products we aspire to deliver to our customers.

The opportunity

  • Set and apply in conjunction with Lead Engineer and LL6 their objectives via Policy Deployment, Performance Review process and Competency Assessment.
  • Lead the design of tooling items specific to the build line.
  • Identify opportunities for improvements throughout the line and lead small projects to achieve these.
  • Consult on tooling requirements throughout PME to make sure best practices are being deployed
  • Provision of technical support to the team in order to meet and exceed output targets. Including provision of Plans, Information, Material, Instruction and Parts.
  • Create and maintain Process FMEA analysis and associated control and quality plans for Build;
  • Draft and validate specifications of machines, test equipment and test tooling to meet engineering requirements for Build,  Build In-Process Test and End of Line Test
  • Is responsible for owning the Timing plan and commissioning and acceptance/trials plan
  • Review requirements from Powertrain Engineering and Manufacturing teams to develop the most efficient and effective Pilot Line, that would support both types of requirements and be an intelligent compromise between design flexibility and manufacturing validation
  • Raise orders to procure Build and Test capability from Engineering Statement of Work to PO
  • Work with suppliers and ensure safe delivery of orders on time and to the agreed quality
  • Hand over all the necessary documents, equipment, tooling and training to the Build Operations and Build Engineering team when Final Acceptance is complete
  • Ensure H&S measures are integrated in the solutions delivered to JLR and the Build teams in coordination with the H&S Team and H&S regulations
  • Maintain department records for audit purposes
  • Mentoring and Training of those in Early Careers and Training as appropriate. 
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time. 

What you’ll need

 Essential:

  • A Level 4 qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
  • Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent in English, Maths and Science
  • Strong ability in CAD, preferably Catia V6 / 3DX
  • Proven ability in tool design
    • Clear and confident communicator both orally and in writing  
    • Proactive attitude and willingness to learn new systems and processes  
    • Ability to accurately and concisely present complex technical ideas to a diverse audience
    • Ability to challenge existing thinking in a positive way whilst building credibility and trust
    • Computer literate, including Microsoft Office and Excel competency to produce plans, reports, presentations, graphs, processes and SPL documents  
    • Ability to mentor and train others

Desirable:

  • A Level 6 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Proven experience in a build process environment
    • Technical expertise and experience of build or manufacturing facilities
    • Technical expertise and experience of EDU, Stator and Rotor technology
    • Experience of delivering both operational, transactional Facilities management solutions
    • Experience with IATF 16949 or ISO 9001 standards and requirements
