WHAT YOU’LL DO

This role is within the Prototype Manufacturing Engineering Team which is part of Powertrain Build and Test Operations and Engineering Operations. The team maintains productive workflow of prototype engine, battery, EDU (Electric Drive Unit), Stator and Rotor builds ensuring that they are built to the correct specification and configuration as detailed by customer teams. Following successful EOLT they are dispatched safely and at the desired quality to enable battery, engine, EDU, E-Machine and vehicle testing with the objective of achieving an on time, safe, quality product release.  

The team's function is to support Powertrain and Product Engineering in their objective of achieving ‘timely, quality’ product releases through supporting the overall Powertrain 'cycle plan'. 

In doing so the team, and all individuals within it, are required to be responsive to their customer needs and requirements. 

The role of the Quality Engineer, across multiple site (both virtually and face-to-face) is to:

  • provide build support to address quality issues
  • reduce the impact of supplier delays through lead time improvements
  • formalise the processes within the team and across the department
  • ensure a robust framework for Quality Engineers and PME/Build Engineers within the team and across the department

 

This will involve resolving any issues identified with the prototype build process while ensuring that all members of the team maintain elevated levels of valid, technical competency in line with E-Learn 554097 Assessment of Competence. They will drive forward the prototype build process to ensure a world class product is delivered on time, to specification and at cost. 


Key Accountabilities and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for ensuring that quality measures and control plans are identified and implemented onto the Build capability plan, including PFMEA, Lessons Learnt
  • Responsible for delivering the associated equipment, information and processes to the PME/Build Team to implement quality control throughout the Prototype Build Lines for all commodities
  • Responsible for internal Quality Process Management including Process Audits, PPR/PIR, QIP’s and the Management of Process Deviation.
  • Responsible for ensuring quality data is set up for collection from the Build processes
  • Responsible for Supplier Development including Supplier Capacity Planning and Validation, Problem Resolution, Audits and Visits, Process Management, Concession Requests, Escalation issues, Management of Sub-Suppliers, Supplier Metrics and external QIP’s.
  • Support implementation of quality metrics, standards and processes within the team and the department
  • Support Manufacturing team to standardise quality control measures as much as possible to validate ahead of Job#1
  • Support PIR and the AIMS Process, Drawing Revision Control and Tolerance Liaison (pro/re-active)
  • Support the internal Build Process from the Build Start-Up Meeting to Problem Resolution, ETA Part, and Logistic Support, Missing Part Resolution and Rework Management
  • Support external activities including PIR, AIMS and Supplier onboarding, Drawing Revision Control  and Tolerance Liaison (pro/re-active)
  • Support Lessons Learnt process and improvement implementation, including action plan
  • Support Customer 8D’s, Quality Metrics, ETS Part Support and Component and Rework Quotes
  • Training PME and Build teams where required for quality processes
  • Mentoring and Training of those in Early Careers as appropriate. 
  • Undertake any other work as directed by their line manager in connection with their job as may be requested from time to time.

 

WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Essential:

  • A Level 4 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline  
  • Functional Skills Level 2 or equivalent in English, Maths and Science  
  • Proven experience of working in a quality environment
  • Proven experience of understanding of facilities, processes, equipment, and leading technologies  
  • Clear and confident communicator both orally and in writing  
  • Proactive attitude and willingness to learn new systems and processes  
  • Ability to accurately and concisely present complex technical ideas or project issues to a diverse audience  
  • Ability to challenge existing thinking in a positive way whilst building credibility and trust through experience and personal style  
  • Computer literate, including Microsoft Office and Excel competency to produce plans, reports, presentations, graphs, processes and SPL documents  
  • Ability to mentor and train others  
  • A full UK Driving Licence with less than 6 penalty points, no disqualifications and 2 years accident free record 

Desirable:

  • A Level 6 qualification in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • Proven experience in a build process environment  
  • Technical expertise and experience of test facilities  
  • Experience of delivering both operational, transactional Facilities management solutions  
  • Experience with IATF 16949 or ISO 9001 standards and requirements
