AWE is looking for either an experienced physicist or experienced electrical/electronic engineer to work within our Pulsed Power Physics team. This role will give the successful candidate the opportunity to become a subject matter expert within a technical team that design, construct and commission devices generating multi-terawatt pulses of RF electromagnetic power and their application in producing radiation bursts. This is a great opportunity to be involved in unique scientific research which underpins the safety and performance of our nuclear programme.

Location: Reading/Basingstoke area
Salary: £41,950 - £60,000 per annum (depending on suitability and level of experience)

This role sits within our Technology Development Group, working with a team of like-minded individuals to investigate the next generation of technology to improve modelling and experiments at AWE. We are looking for a senior Physicist or experienced Electrical/Electronic Engineer to step into this role and work with AWE and its internal stakeholders to deliver important data and projects to the wider business. This role also comes with exciting opportunities to travel to the US, France and within the UK to represent the business. Other responsibilities include:

  • Design, construct and commission high pulsed power devices
  • Incorporate technological understanding and stakeholder needs to advise on suitable development programmes
  • Develop collaborative programmes with academia, industry and government laboratories to tailor emergent technologies to AWE need
  • Provide technical leadership of projects at phases from concept to beneficial use

We are looking for candidates to ideally have the following:

  • A degree in a scientific or STEM discipline, equivalent NQF level 6 qualification or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated delivery of projects with one or more of the following aspects: pulsed power, radiofrequency technologies, electron beam control and high voltage design
  • Previous experience with stakeholder management and engagement
  • Previous experience in leading technical projects and/or task management
  • Previous experience in safely conducting hazardous experimentation

Candidates must be willing to obtain and maintain the necessary clearance for the role.
