By 2050, the planet could be using twice as much electricity compared to today. Are you interested in contributing and helping to shape the future of the world’s energy? If so, read on.

Fusion, the process that powers the Sun and Stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. UKAEA are at the forefront of realising energy from fusion, working with industry and research partners to deliver the ground-breaking developments that will underpin tomorrow's fusion power stations with the aim of bringing fusion electricity to the grid.

As we work towards our mission and goals, UKAEA has devised values that capture the spirit of how we work. These values include being: Innovative, Committed, Trusted and Collaborative.

Who are we looking for?

The RACE Safety Engineer will deliver through-life safety support to project teams, providing insight into system risk, input into safety architectures and review of the built system.

The Safety Engineer will have the opportunity to work on systems utilising cutting edge technology across a wide range of domains. Your work will support the development of internal safety management as well as influence approaches for managing safety risk in emerging systems. You will be chairing safety reviews throughout the lifecycle, supporting safety management process design and deployment. This role will also give you an opportunity to have ownership of safety-related aspects of assigned projects, acting as the Safety Subject Matter Expert (SME) within the wider team and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accommodate and integrate safety among other system requirements.

If you can effectively articulate complex concepts to stakeholders, are capable of developing and leading junior team members as well as you are able to deliver work in cross-functional teams with a confident approach to problem-solving, then we would like to hear from you.

What will you be responsible for?

- Working alongside project teams to review system architectures and their associated PL/SILs

- Supporting safety management process design and deployment through training and outreach

- Leading projects through the full safety lifecycle including compliance with standards, cross-disciplinary advise, SIF/SIS design and requirements setting

- Leading reviews of system risk through the assessment of built systems, technical specifications, drawings, built equipment and peer review

- Chairing risk management workshops; using techniques such as HazOp, FMEA, Event and Fault Tree analysis to interrogate system design ensuring system risk is captured and mitigated as early as possible in the project lifecycle

- Reviewing advanced technologies and emergent standards that may shape advances in safety engineering and advising on improvements

Please note that there is a potential for infrequent travel in support of commissioning activity.
