Scope of Role:

Manage the delivery of the design, commissioning and testing of electrical and software systems for various machine tool projects. 

Location: Homebased with travel to HQ in Chorley when required

Salary: £50,000 – £70,000 per annum (dependent upon experience)

Reporting to: Engineering & Design Manager

Providing Support to: Service Director, Engineering Manager, Electrical Fitters, Managing Director

Key Deliverables/Accountabilities: 

  • Manage projects for the development of electrical, electronic and software systems from concept to commissioning, ensuring that the project follows the appropriate processes, meets the required specifications, and is delivered within agreed cost and time constraints
  • Coordinate a small team of in-house and external designers to produce electrical and control designs together with associated documentation for Machine Tool projects from concept to commissioning
  • Design, specify, develop, and verify electrical systems
  • Design, develop, test and commission PLC software (typically Siemens) for projects.
  • Provide expertise on functional safety
  • Produce and communicate FAT and SAT criteria for projects
  • Produce functional design specifications.
  • Derive bills of materials from produced designs.
  • Communicate with the shop floor assembly team and trouble shoot problems. 
  • Contribute to the production and development of functional design specifications for each project.
  • Modify and maintain drawings such that they reflect the “as built” condition of each machine. 
  • Commission machines such that all functions are in working order ready for customer acceptance.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager to produce documentation for customer specific, mandatory or regulatory conformance (for example: CE / UKCA marking). 
  • Provide relevant electrical hardware expertise and support to various R&D projects, including production of drawings for new developments. 
  • Occasionally support customers with software issues – typically this will be done remotely.
  • Occasionally attend customers facilities to assist in establishing scopes of work, specifications…. etc
  • Manage time and prioritise tasks to support overall project plans such that delivery is achieved “on time”. 
  • Maintain a “right first time” approach, ensuring that all designs and machines delivered to customers are of the highest possible standard. 
  • Any other reasonable request made by a Director or Line Manager

Qualifications/Experience: 

  • Degree or HNC qualified in a relevant electrical, electronic or software engineering discipline 
  • Experience working in a similar role within the CNC Machine Tool or high precision automation industry (OEM or aftermarket) and / or highly regulated industry such as nuclear
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams
  • Highly competent in an electrical CAD system (e.g., Solidworks Electrical, Autocad, EPLAN)
  • Competent in MS office.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
