Marine Engineering & Systems – Shipbuilding Export Variants

Senior Marine Structures Engineer role is based within Marine Engineering & Systems – Shipbuilding Export Variants.

Babcock is rapidly establishing itself as an international Naval ship designer and builder. We have built on the success of the UK MoD Type 31 Frigate and have secured contracts for frigate export variants (AH140) with overseas customers. As well as supporting exports of frigates the engineering team is actively working on other ship newbuild and life extension programs around the world, from small fast attack craft all the way up to aircraft carriers.

You will join a national team of over 800 engineers and designers within the Marine Sector of Babcock. We are a leading design consultancy providing naval architecture, marine system engineering, electrical engineering, design modelling and project support services to the marine and defence markets. We have base offices in Bristol, Rosyth or Plymouth, and offer flexible working with office attendance and travel to meet project requirements.

The role

The difference our new Senior Marine Structures Engineer will make

As a Senior Marine Structures Engineer, you’ll have a role that’s out of the ordinary. This is a highly prestigious position within our complex shipbuilding programme, developing designs through concept and early-stage design as well as supporting the bidding process.

Day-to-day, you will be responsible for determination of global loads (Still Water Bending Moment, Wave Bending Moment and Shear Forces) from classification societies’ rules and regulations. Determination of local loads and scantlings (including midship section and other critical sections) from classification societies’ rules and regulations. Determination of hull girder strength from classification societies’ rules and regulations (ESA, RSA, SDA and FDA). 

You will design and substantiation of Category A and B seatings and foundations to meet military and commercial requirements. Preparation and checking of specifications, technical reports and substantiation calculations. You will liaise with design teams, production teams, classification society representatives and other stakeholders (including supporting design reviews).

You will be responsible for contribution towards the development of innovative design solutions and processes. As well as contribution towards the maintenance and improvement in quantity standards of outputs.

In addition, you will belong to the wider engineering capability group and will have the opportunity to support other projects in different roles within your discipline with a focus on longer term career development.

Essential experience

  • Ideally, you will be Degree qualified but HND/HNC level qualification in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering or Mechanical Engineering with extensive experience in relevant field will be considered
  • You will be a member of a relevant institution (e.g. RINA, ImarEst, IMechE etc.) and either hold chartered engineer status or be working towards it
  • Experience in the naval/marine industry with classification society plan appraisal experience being advantageous
  • Either already UK Security cleared or able for achieve UK SC clearance
