We have an opportunity for someone to join our multi-disciplined team in Brighton and be responsible for the mechanical design of L3Harris products. You will use CAD techniques to produce functional and cost effective designs, that take the product from concept through to production and beyond.

We’re also seeking someone with the ability to take the lead and act as a deputy for the Design Manager when required and take on a Senior role within the team.

At L3Harris in Brighton we are part of Release Systems and the Mission Avionics sector operating in the Aerospace domain. We specialise in high performance electro-mechanical systems and pneumatic technology for airborne weapon carriage release.

What you’ll bring

The role of Senior Mechanical Design Engineer requires the following experience and skills:

• A Mechanical Engineering qualification with demonstrable work experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer
• Substantial SolidWorks CAD and SolidWorks PDM experience
• Good understanding of; Geometric Tolerancing, Stack-Up Analysis, BS8888
• Experience of designing products with low costs from the outset (DFMA & Design to Cost methodologies)
• Full life cycle design knowledge
• Understanding of legislative requirement of products and product development.
• Technical Report writing
• Mechanical Engineering Calculations, Stress Analysis, Fluid Dynamics (FEA and CFD).
• To be familiar with the requirements and capabilities of PDM and ERP systems.
• Aerospace or Defence industry experience would be desirable (or another highly regulated industry)
• Mechanisms and pneumatics experience would be desirable
• High attention to detail
• Proficient IT skills
• Ability to work to deadlines, prioritise workload appropriately in conjunction with projects
• Perform work accurately with minimal supervision and have a methodical approach to work

What the role will involve

If you were to join our team of dedicated experts, the responsibilities of your role will include the following:

• Produce design schemes and proposals in response to specifications
• Produce detailed CAD (Solid Works) design layouts (model and draft) and manufacturing drawings as well as delegating work to others in the team.
• Deputise for the Design Manager when required and take on senior duties within the team
• Choose material forming solutions suitable for the duty and quantity of components to be made
• Check design drawings for completeness and accuracy
• Select and source proprietary parts/components that are fit for purpose
• Support project monthly estimating and manage own work to meet cost estimates and schedule
• Support Investigations, solutions and write reports
• Follow procedures to meet the requirements of ISO-9001and AS9100
• Support internal, customer and supplier meetings
• Be prepared to assist with other engineering duties (e.g. testing, experimentation, modelling, CAD design etc) as work-load may demand from time to time
• Liaise with Production Engineering to ensure optimum choice of production methods and materials for economic manufacture
• Comply with Quality Assurance (QA) requirements and procedures
• Provides guidance and leadership to projects and team members through mentoring and training of others in team or department.
