The role

As a Senior Naval Architect, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You'll be part of Babcock's Submarine Support Engineering (SSE) group. It's mission is to deliver submarine programme and engineering excellence through enterprise collaboration, innovation, and analytics. Within Babcock SSE the Constructive Group support the Royal Navy Submarine Fleet through the Structures, Naval Architecture, Seamanship and Outfitting and Design Change disciplines.

Day to day, you'll conduct tasking and provide technical leadership for Naval Architecture projects, including:

  • Hydrostatic Stability Analysis
  • Hydrodynamic Manoeuvring & Control Analysis
  • Weights Engineering & Growth Monitoring
  • Design Change Management
  • Inclining Experiments

Duties will also include:

  • Draft and approve technical reports or other documents relevant, or required by, a particular task to ensure that technical findings can be successfully communicated with our clients.
  • Prepare and submit technical proposals and tenders in order to provide costed proposals for future work.
  • Organise and lead constructive surveys of Royal Navy Submarines in support of various tasking.
  • Participate in a wide range of activities including feasibility & options studies, concept design, detailed design, support to delivery and in-service support to submarines and naval base facilities.

Essential experience of the Senior Naval Architect:

  • Familiarity and/or experience of working within the UK Marine Defence sector, specifically Royal Navy Submarines and/or Ships.
  • Familiarity with standard stability assessment methods, standards and codes.
  • An understanding of stability certification in a MOD framework and experience using Paramarine Software.
  • Awareness of standard submarine hydrodynamic assessment methods, standards, and codes.

This position is based in Bristol with hybrid working and you will be required on site at least 2 days a week. We are also open to candidates based in Plymouth near our Devonport Royal Dockyard, who can attend the Bristol office at least once a month.

Qualifications for the Senior Naval Architect:

  • Degree qualified in Naval Architecture / Marine Technology / Ship Science.
  • Professionally Registered (CEng/IEng) as a member of The Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) or equivalent; or willing to work towards this within 12 months.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
