The role
As a Senior Radioactive Waste Engineer, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary where you will be integral in progressing a number of waste packages to disposal, for a number of major boat programmes. You'll also have the opportunity to work towards a portfolio to progress to Senior Waste Engineer.

Day to day, you'll ensure work conducted within Radioactive Waste Facilities is undertaken safely and in accordance with our processes. The Radioactive Waste Team is focused on site wide waste demand, governance, project integration and technical support to the business.

  • Providing waste management expertise in support of the characterisation, processing, sentencing, and packaging of radioactive Intermediate Level Waste (ILW), Low Level Waste (LLW) and Conditionally Exempt waste (CEW)
  • Providing advice and guidance to major projects to enable timely treatment and/or disposal of their radioactive waste material
  • Development and implementation of relevant documentation, ensuring compliance with licences and permits relating to radioactive waste through the application of Best Application Techniques (BAT)
  • Leading and mentoring junior members of the radioactive waste team


This is a full time, permanent role based onsite at Devonport Royal Dockyard with the opportunity to work from home when required.

Essential experience of the Senior Radioactive Waste Engineer:

  • An applied understanding of radioactive waste management including characterisation, processing, sentencing, packaging, and transport
  • Extensive knowledge of environmental legislation in the UK Nuclear Industry
  • Determination and application of BAT and the presentation of suitably underpinned and justifiable supporting arguments.

Qualifications for the Senior Radioactive Waste Engineer:

  • Degree qualified in a relevant subject
  • Radioactive waste management qualifications and / or extensive experience is essential

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC and NNPPI security clearance for this role.
