About the job

AWE is currently recruiting for multiple Stress FEA Engineers with varying levels of experience to join their Engineering Analysis Team.

The Engineering Analysis Team is a world-class, multi-disciplinary team of thermal, structural and blast analysis engineers that provide modelling and simulation expertise to AWE.

The team works on interesting and challenging projects at all stages of the weapon's life cycle - from its design and manufacture to its transport, operation, and decommissioning.

The team's work underpins continuous-at-sea-deterrence (CASD) and contributes to the security of the nation.

Location: Aldermaston, West Berkshire (RG7 4PR).

We are located between Reading and Basingstoke, with onsite parking.

Salary Packages:

The below all depend on your suitability, qualifications and level of experience.

  • Graduate Stress Engineer (recent graduates with Bachelors or Masters degree): £30,000 - £45,000

  • Stress Engineer (graduates with post-graduate experience or a PhD): £38,000 - £57,000

  • Senior Stress Engineer (experienced engineer with qualifications and/or significant experience in industry): £48,000 - £75,000

Closing date: 29th October 2024

Who Are We Looking For?

To be considered for this role, we require the following:

  • A Bachelor's or Master's degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline such as Aeronautical Engineering, Materials Technology, Mathematics, Physics. Equivalent relevant experience will also be considered.

  • Strong motivation and enthusiasm to work in highly technical and challenging engineering environments.

  • Experience with using any 2D & 3D finite element analysis (FEA) tools (such as ANSYS, Abaqus, LS-DYNA) to solve structural and/or thermal engineering problems.

  • Experience using any pre-processors such as Hypermesh, ANSYS Mechanical, Abaqus/CAE, etc. to prepare geometry and construct finite element meshes.

  • Strong interpersonal/communication skills, report writing and presentation skills.

We are particularly interested in candidates who can demonstrate knowledge or experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Complex structural analysis problems, e.g. non-linear geometry/materials, transient explicit dynamics or frequency-domain analysis (modal, harmonic, shock response).

  • Thermal analysis problems, such as transient or steady-state thermal analysis.

  • Multi-physics problems, e.g. fluid-structure interaction or thermal-mechanical stress analysis.

  • Python scripting for automating pre-/post-processing of finite element models and for analysis workflow efficiency.

  • Performing model verification and validation (V&V) activities such as mesh convergence studies, comparison to hand-calculations and experimental tests.

  • Use of Linux-based high-performance computing (HPC) clusters to solve large finite element models.

  • Research and development of novel engineering simulation techniques.

  • Providing technical leadership and leading outreach initiatives with academia and industrial partners.

  • Mentoring junior analysts and reviewing analysis work.

  • Consulting with customers to understand their modelling and simulation requirements and translate these into packages of analysis work.

We look forward to receiving your application. If you are a less experienced professional or just starting your engineering career, we encourage you to attach a cover letter.

The role offers opportunities to progress a career in the above technical specialisms or into managerial positions. The team has a very supportive culture that strongly encourages continuous development and provides training for our analysts all the way through their career.
