Vanguard submarines provide a British nuclear deterrent, this is the ultimate guarantee of our security and that of our allies. Occasionally, Deep Maintenance Projects (DMP) are arranged to ensure that the submarines are refitted, maintained and operable and ready to protect the country.


The role
As a System Optimisation Engineer - Submarine Strategic Weapon (SSW), you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. You will optimise the deep maintenance projects for our vanguard submarines, specifically for the strategic weapon systems abord these vessels.

Day to day, working with the Assistant Chief Engineer, DMP team and the Submarine Delivery Agency customers, using your insight and organisation skills, you will help the team achieve our goal of continuously improving our ways of working and the success of our vital maintenance operations. You will:

  • Collect, assess, and track ideas and improvements in our nuclear ballistic missile submarines (SSBN) maintenance projects.
  • Plan for the implementation of the best ideas and coordinate their execution, managing them to completion and assessing their success.
  • Assess the technical and schedule benefits of improvements, collect data, and explain findings to colleagues and the customer.
  • Report on our collective success and progress to internal and external teams.

The System Optimisation Engineer - SSW role is 35 hours per week, offering a hybrid working pattern with a 2-day onsite expectation and will be based at our site in Devonport. There will be opportunities to visit our Customer HQ, Abbey Wood in Bristol, and HM Naval Base Clyde, in Scotland for training.

Essential experience of the System Optimisation Engineer - SSW

  • Experienced with project controls, project life cycles, schedules, and risks.
  • Experienced with control of work, preventive maintenance, and defect rectification.
  • Experienced in stakeholder management.

It is desirable, but not essential, to have submarine or maritime weapon support system and their maintenance experience.

Qualifications for the System Optimisation Engineer - SSW

  • A Degree, Higher National Diploma, Higher National Certificate or BTEC National Certificate/Diploma in engineering or project management, or similar qualification or experience.
  • Membership of a professional body, or actively working towards it.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
