The Role
As a Technical Author, you'll have a role that's out of the ordinary. As a Technical Author for Radioactive Waste Management (RWM) the successful applicant will be sued with authoring procedures required within the industrial team to carry out operations and maintenance on the facility. Consisting of many specialised roles, the RWM team is charged with the responsibility of the safe collection, handling, treating and disposal of radioactive waste generated across the licensed site. RWM also ensure the delivery of the planned maintenance schedule for a wide range of both fixed and mobile assets.

Day to day, you'll you will be tasked to research and produce, detailed control documentation which sequences and instructs operations that support the Radioactive Waste organisation and the associated that take place within them i.e. maintenance of equipment, replacement of obsolescent equipment, testing of equipment, installation of equipment, operation of equipment etc:

  • You will ensure that strict mandatory / contractual and legislative standards of nuclear safety and conventional health and safety are maintained when producing technical documentation.
  • Whilst producing documentation you will perform quality checking to your own work and the work of your peers.
  • You will provide advice and guidance to Project/Production departments to support with costing and planning analysis for on-going work programming.
  • Liaising with other departments as necessary to provide technical input/receive technical information.

This role is a full-time position, 36 hours per week and based at HMNB Devonport, in Plymouth. Once you're fully embedded in the role, there is potential for you to work within a hybrid working arrangement, however you will still be expected to work onsite for the majority of the week.

Essential Experience of the Technical Author:

  • Understand / interpret a variety of technical documents and drawings.
  • Ability to use a variety of sources of information to extract necessary and important data to populate procedures and operational documentation.
  • Appreciation / understanding of / experience working in a regulated environment.
  • Appreciation / understanding of / experience working in industrial areas and the associated hazards.
  • Good stakeholder management and communication skills.

Qualifications for the Technical Author:

  • BTEC Level 3 or equivalent in relevant discipline (STEM subjects) or equivalent OR
  • Recognised Apprenticeship in relevant discipline (STEM subjects) OR
  • Relevant experience in an engineering discipline.

The successful candidate must be able to achieve SC security clearance for this role.
