The QinetiQ Hebrides Range Engineering Group is made up of multidisciplinary teams who deliver high quality and expert service to a wide range of military and government customers. We conduct testing, trials, training and evaluation on the largest Air and Sea Range in Western Europe.

The role

As a Radio Systems Technician, you will have a role that is out of the ordinary, focused on the maintenance and live operation of Telemetry Data Acquisition systems, as well as the Range's Flight Termination System, located at South Uist & St. Kilda. In addition the site operates an array of tracking radar, trials control and distributed IT systems providing the opportunity for pro-active individuals to gain a working knowledge across a wide range of equipment and systems.

Day-to-day, you'll be required to assist in the maintenance and operation of other systems, such as radio communications, surveillance radar and cable infrastructure, as required. All equipment specific training and supervision will be provided.

  • Participate in both formal and on-the-job training as required
  • Undertake maintenance of a variety of Ground Radio Systems for which you have been deemed competent and current
  • Operate equipment during trials for which you have been deemed competent and current

The successful candidate will be expected to pass medicals to enable Advanced Climber activities (working at height level-3) and also to undertake the Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) with Compressed Air-Emergency Breathing Systems (CA-EBS) to enable travel to St Kilda via helicopter. In the support of equipment and trials there will be occasions of overtime/extended hours and weekend working which is recompensed in line with company policy.

Essential experience of the Range Systems Technician

  • Practical hand skills and safe working practices
  • Ability to maintain accurate and consistent records
  • Familiarity with Microsoft and/or Linux operating systems and packages
  • Familiarity with IT network infrastructure (Fibre-optic and copper)
  • A practical understanding of digital signals and RF principles

Qualifications for the Range Systems Technician

  • Experience in a computing or electrical and electronic engineering discipline, accompanied by a relevant HNC or equivalent qualification
  • Experience working on electrical equipment
  • Experience working at height would be beneficial
  • Valid Full UK Driving license
