Job Description
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for 6 experienced line managers to lead capable teams of engineers and scientists, supporting development, setting objectives and coaching. You would be responsible for technical projects in either engineering or science.
- For engineers: Provide cutting-edge knowledge to UKAEA engineers and technologists, driving development in expertise areas and recommending test solutions as needed. Act as a technical lead in testing, prototyping, and development activities, guiding small multi-disciplinary teams while ensuring quality and safety.
- For scientists: Demonstrate deep understanding of relevant scientific principles, processes, and related technologies, staying up to date with the latest advancements in the field and applying this knowledge to effectively support the research and development of tritium science and technology. Act as scientific lead in outcome setting, design of experiments, analysis, and publishing articles or patents, guiding small multi-disciplinary teams.
What will you be responsible for?
- Ensure that staff safety, health and welfare are maintained and adhered to in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Actively promote UKAEA’s values, championing a culture of equality, diversity, and inclusion.
- Effective and timely management of staff, including, but not limited to: setting resource allocation and recruitment requirements, knowledge transfer, welfare, setting measurable objectives and performance management, absence management, professional development, and coaching.
- Ensure suitably qualified and experienced staff are in place to meet both current and future organisational needs as per UKAEA standards, ensuring management systems and relevant regulations are appropriate and adhered to.
- Provide support to and/or deliver projects by providing technical leadership.
- Provide cutting-edge knowledge to UKAEA engineers and technologists, driving development in expertise areas and recommending test solutions as needed.
- Act as a technical lead in testing, prototyping, and development activities, guiding small multi-disciplinary teams while ensuring quality and safety. Understand the impact of complex logistics and technical aspects on project effectiveness.
- Source appropriate testing solutions, including internal bespoke equipment development or external solutions procurement.
- Represent and promote H3AT’s innovative offerings and technical specialisms both internally and externally.
- Work in accordance with UKAEA policy and undertake any other reasonable tasks or duties requested by your manager.
Possibility of working in radioactive areas.
Budget Responsibility:
Depending on the project, but generally up to £200,000 p.a.
Qualifications
Essential skills, experience and competence required
- Degree or equivalent level in relevant STEM subject with demonstratable engineering experience
- Experience of working on projects as a technical lead.
- Experience line managing and coaching technical individuals.
- Experience in building and leading technical teams.
- Mentoring engineers and scientists.
Desirable skills, experience and competence
- Chartered status with a professional body (or equivalent demonstrable endorsement from peers).
- Demonstrated experience in relevant technology or research field.
